Crisp synthesizer melodies elevate over powerful vintage drums and warm finger picked bass guitar. The same track may consist of a catchy melody reminiscent of a children’s bed time song but a beat and chord structure that would make any serious jazz fan proud. The band name translates directly to ”telescreen” and like it’s origin in the George Orwell novel ”1984”, Teleskärm’s music is equal parts beautifully dystopic and space era futuristic. Marcus Sjöberg and Mattias Greén both display serious skills in the craft of playing their instruments, but the true magic of their collaboration lies in their playful attitude towards integrating machines, analogue synths and vintage effects.
Teleskärm’s self titled debut album was digitally released on October 23rd 2015, accompanied by a fourteen-page booklet. The mineral-themed artwork by Beast Studio is organically composed by hand, then printed on a Risograph machine before final conversion into digital form. All of the eleven instrumental tracks portray epic soundscapes and prove once and for all that you don’t need lyrics to explore complex themes. From the crackling in-your-face opening track ”Atlanten”, via the hair-raisingly beautiful electro-jazz power ballad ”Standing in a corner”, to what can only be described as the equivalent to an electronica big band session in ”TLSKRM originalus”.
